The timelines are skillfully intermixed, with revelations from one impacting the other. Both of these periods are main parts of the book, unlike the occasional flash-forwards of the other books. It covers two time periods, the immediate aftermath of the conclusion of the second book and a period of time three years later. The book is structured a bit differently than the previous stories. We all know these characters, and thankfully there is another “Previously on…” section to get everyone back up to speed. Unsurprisingly, it’s very easy to get back in the groove of things. The three earlier examples are Without Fail, Echo Burning and Running Blind. We have reviewed many Jack Reacher books here before. The only way the killer could have escaped is out the window and across the moat, which could be waded. John Douglas was shot at point blank range with a double barrelled shotgun blast to the face, yet only his house guest, Cecil Barker, heard the shot and was at the scene of the crime in minutes. Birlstone Manor is a moated property, with the drawbridge raised every night. Of course this only whets Holmes's appetite for the crime, because it obviously has some connection to Moriarty. Holmes's snitch lost his nerve and sent the note too late. His help in the murder of one John Douglas of Birlstone Manor in Just as Holmes finishes perusing the note the police arrive to ask for This snitch warns him of the impending murder of one John Douglas.
